Sections Overview

Sections are used to manage two important aspects of a virtual school.  In a virtual school, an unlimited number of students may take any online course at anytime. However, the teacher of records is still responsible tofor grade student work and assign final grades.  ToToo many students in a course can overwhelm any online teacher, especially as some organizations have a requirement for the student to have virtual, synchronous lessons or for the teacher to hold office hours.

Sections are also used to create private groups of teachers and students in Moodle.  PEMS allows proctors to assist in monitoring student progress, so it is critical that proctors only view specific students Moodle.  The sections table helps to accomplish this objective.

Data Relationships

Each curriculum record can have multiple sections.  Each section of the curriculum record would be created for the students at a particular location taking the related Moodle course.  A location will have multiple student grade levels, any combination of K through 12 students, so the sections are not restricted to specific grade level.

The sections are related to the homeroom, a unique feature of PEMS that allows third parties to get a small group of students together and designate a proctor to manage them.  A section can have only one homeroom.

Students are of course related to sections.

As a location or Homeroom is allowed multiple proctors, multiple proctors can be related to the corresponding section.  Ans since there are multiple courses their students will be taking, proctors are also related to multiple sections. There is a many to many relationship between proctors and sections.

The proctor does not fulfill the regulatory requirements of the teacher of record. There can be only one teacher of record for any class as student takes, so there is only one teacher of record for a section. A section may be related to only one teacher of record, but that teacher of record may related to multiple sections for other classes the teacher teaches.  The teacher  of record is not related to the curriculum record, the teacher is only related to the section record.  In relating the teacher to the section record, SIS can better manage the reporting on which specific students took the course under what teacher.
