In the US, teachers obtain credentials that allow them to teach specific subject, or grade levels. The specifc rules vary through all grade levels and across all the various States.

The authorization to teach a certain grade level a certain subject usually has a duration, there is a date where the teacher is no longer authorized to teach the class.
